This was my second year in Western Massachusetts for Cider Days and the best one yet. I bet a say that every year too. Seriously if you are in the area, or can plan to be in the area do it. It is a THE BEST weekend of cider and apple related events available in the US. In Western Massachusetts apples just seem to be a part of the culture. There are small orchards, heirloom growers, specialty nursuries, cidermakers, and more tucked into this small pocket of the country. Make sure you take a few days to really explore the area. It truly is a treasure everyone should see once.

More on Franklin County Cider Days later...

Last year about this time I was contacted by a Chef Chris Haworth about a cider dinner project he had been putting together. As Chris put it he thought Ontario Cidermakers had never been brought together for an event like this. As it turned out they hadn't and as you'll read in Chris' note below the participating cidermakers formed their own cider association.

Over the past few years Ontario wine and cider have both experienced a boom and surge in both interest and consumers. Both are also taking home awards. Quite a few Ontario ciders claimed prizes at last year's Great Lakes International Cider & Perry Competition. While the cidermakers and winemakers are doing their jobs right, I'm sure a little thanks is due to innovative pioneering chefs like Chris who support local artisans and celebrate their craft with the class and pageantry they all deserve.

Well they are doing it all over again and I was just asked to post notice that Ontario's 2nd Annual Cider Tasting Dinner at Spencer's at the Waterfront is happening once again on Sunday March 4th 2012.

Chef Chris Haworth's note.

Sunday 4th March 2012, I will be hosting a dinner at Spencer’s Burlington on the same lines as a ‘winemakers dinner’ but using Ontario’s finest Hard ciders. Last year we had 4 cideries participate and this year we have an astonishing 10! Coffin Ridge, Bains Road, Spirit tree, Beaver valley cider co, Carrick wines and cider, Applewood farm, Pommies dry, Twin Pines, County cider co, Sunnybrook farm. This just reflects how fast this sector has gathered pace in the last 12 months alone. Last year’s dinner saw Ontario cider makers come together for the first time and as a direct result of this the Ontario cider makers association was born.

If you are in or near Ontario and enjoy cider or locally made goods this dinner is for you.
Appearance
Color: Straw to Light Gold
Clarity: Clear to Brilliant
Carbonation: Petilant
Brightness: Bright+ (Above Average)

Aroma
Moderately subtle soft aromas of tart cherry, mandarin, with a slightly floral finish.

Taste
This Baldwin cider is hard to get a read on for sweetness. While it is overall fairly dry it is sweet enough to bring out some flavors and balance the show out. We got flavors of lemon, tangerine, honey-suckle, and a spicy finish.

Body & Finish
Very clean, astringent, acidic, crisp finish. Honey-like body with a moderate length finish.

Happy New Years Part 1 - Foggy Ridge Cider's First Fruit

New Year's Eve again and we are celebrating at home with a little cider and a few mini reviews. This is our second year and like last year we started out tonight at 9 PM PST (our time zone) with an Eastcoast Cider... Hopefully as their clocks are striking midnight. Tonight we kicked it all off with Foggy Ridge Cider's First Fruit.

Appearance
Color: Straw to Gold
Carbonation: Fizzy
Clarity: Very Brilliant
Brightness: Very Vivid

Aroma
Foggy Ridge's First Fruit Cider has moderate intenisty nose of a very high quality. We detected fresh, herbaceous, earthy almost sweet aromas of over-ripe peaches with floral rose-like overtones deep down.

Taste
First Fruit is a clean, simple - yet complex, straight foward cider that starts off sweet, moves toward the acidic and finishes off clean with soft tannins. The flavors are as clean as the aromas. Grapefruit, lots of lemon, and red underripe currant.

Body & Finish
Clean finish, astringent, acidic, crisp, tannic of moderate length. Refreshing medium body is perfect for this cider. Excellent balance.

I have always found great satisfaction and pride in purchasing direct from the folks who make the products. It's nice to know that with the exception of a few taxes as much money as possible found it's way into the hands of the cidermaker. In many cases buying online from cidermakers accomplishes that, with the caveat of having to pay for shipping instead of gas.

Purchasing cider on the internet is not quite as easy as it sounds. Finding a good cidermaker who ships direct to the customer is the most difficult part.

I've compiled a quick list of those cidermakers I could find that do sell online. Each state's laws and regulations are a little different. Not every cidermaker can ship to every state. Read each of the website policies carefully and try to be understanding if they are not able to ship to you.

Boy where do I begin? It's been quite a while and for that I apologize. I've been buried in freelance and volunteer work since early last May. Most of my efforts and time have been cider related however. I took on the design and promotion for the Northwest Cider Association's Summer Cider Day last July, and as soon as I had recovered from that we were planning Washington Cider Week where I played the same role. It's been a busy but great year for the Northwest Cider Association and we are steadily moving forward and have been learning a lot about what it takes to be a part of a volunteer organization. I've also been working hard on a project or two worth a mention down to road. stay tuned.

At the moment I am flying high above the clouds (experiencing mild but prolonged turbulence) on my way to my second year of Franklin County Cider Days in Western Massachusetts. For those of you who are not in the know Cider Days is a community event celebrating all things apple that has gained a not so local attendee list. It has sort of become the defacto gathering of commercial cidermakers. Those cidermakers in attendance get together the day before on Friday for a collective forum and dinner.

I'll be taking in a little light cider travel before the weekend with Mike Beck of Uncle John's Fruit House Winery, Philippe Bishop from Alpenfire Cider, cider writer Ben Watson, and apple guru Tom Burford of Vintage Virginia Apples. Amongst our few stops will be a visit to Farnum Hill Cider and Poverty Lane Orchards.

The cider travel will be great I'm sure but i can't wait to get to Cider Days... Especially Saturday. Highlights will no doubt be the workshops, cidermaker forum, cider salon, and the cider dinner that wraps Saturday up. Should i have time I hope to make it to the heirloom apple tasting and ice cider tasting on Sunday but I do have a plane home to catch. For those who are interested I will be doing my very best to keep you all up to date with a few blow by blow live postings and some imagery via Facebookand Twitter.

I hope you stay tuned and if you are attending Cider Days look for the red cap with the 2 white W's on it. Underneath that cap, and possibly behind a camera lens or poking away at my iPhone, you'll find me. If you do see me say hi. I met some really great folks last year, some of which I've been able to keep in touch with now and again, I'm looking at you Scott.

My trip was made possible once again through the generosity of Tieton Cider Works and Harmony Orchards. Tieton is headed into its third year of cider production, they have a great time, delicious cider and they are and taking no prisoners. Give them a try! Can't find any Tieton Cider? They have heir ciders available online at TietonCiderWorks.com

Cider Summit NW Seattle 2011 Pictures & Slideshow
